Local Landmarks and Buildings in Local Historic Districts

The Quincy City Council created the Preservation Commission in 1982 to identify buildings, structures, districts, landscapes, and other historic resources worthy of protection as Local Landmarks or as buildings in Local Historic Districts. 

After an extensive review of an application and a public hearing, the Commission recommends individual buildings or features to the City Council for Landmark designation, or groups of buildings for Local Historic District designation by ordinance  

The heart of each designating ordinance is a list of protected exterior features (interior features are not covered).  Property owners are required to obtain a Certificate of Appropriateness from the Commission to alter or remove protected features, or to make any significant change to the exterior, such as building a room addition.  A Certificate is not needed for routine maintenance procedures such as painting or installing new storm windows.  

A Certificate is usually not difficult to obtain.  For example, the Commission has worked with owners to provide handicapped access and to allow modern materials to be used for porch repair or roof replacement. 

Local Landmark and Local Historic District designations run with the properties.
