Quincy Public Art Commission

The Public Art Commission is a city board/commission established by the City of Quincy to support, enhance and promote the visual public art environment throughout the community. It was created in 2019. It consists of 14 members, and 13 have voting privileges. Members are appointed by the mayor with the advice and consent of the City Council. The commission brings together community members with interest and expertise in the arts to advise city government and help shape Quincy's aesthetic identity.

Key responsibilities

  • Reviews public art priorities with the Quincy Next Strategic Plan.
  • Seeks public and private input and funds for potential public art projects.
  • Hires and manages artists, volunteers and other people to complete and maintain public art projects.
  • Promotes public art in Quincy. The commission encourages the creation, installation and preservation of public art — such as sculptures, murals, installations and community art projects — in parks, public buildings, streetscapes and other civic spaces.
  • Advocates for artistic and cultural expression. The group helps ensure that art and culture are part of Quincy's public spaces and community life. This can include:
  • Celebrating local artists
  • Encouraging new artistic ideas
  • Helping integrate art into community planning
  • Advise city officials. The commission provides recommendations to the Mayor, City Council and city staff regarding public art policies, proposals and initiatives.
  • They may review and offer guidance on:
  • Art project proposals
  • Funding opportunities
  • Site selection and placement of artwork
  • Help develop public art policies.
  • They assist in developing or updating:
  • Procedures for acquiring art
  • Criteria for site selection
  • Guidelines for public art maintenance
  • Standards for community involvement to ensure that investments in public art are thoughtful, community-focused and sustainable.
  • Encourage community engagement. The commission may work to involve the public in art planning through events, exhibitions, outreach and educational initiatives that help Quincy residents connect with public art.
