Barge Dock Committee

The Barge Dock Committee is a standing committee of the Quincy City Council made up of elected aldermen who focus on issues related to the Quincy Regional Barge Dock, a city-owned barge facility on the Mississippi River used for freight and industrial shipping. The committee's responsibilities generally include:

Members review reports and issues related to the Quincy Regional Barge Dock. They discuss projects, improvements, leases, contracts and policies before making recommendations to the full City Council. For example, committee reports (such as annual updates) are presented to the City Council for acceptance and action.

Review operational, financial and strategic issues: This can include dock improvements, maintenance needs, contract renewals (e.g., long-term leases with operators), and investment decisions — all of which affect local businesses, transportation infrastructure and economic activity in the region.

The Quincy Regional Barge Dock is a municipally-owned facility that:

  • Serves industrial and commercial users along the Mississippi River,
  • Is strategically important because it's open year-round through Lock & Dam Pool 21, and
  • Has seen significant city investment (e.g., repairs and elevation projects to remain operational during flooding).

The committee helps ensure the City Council is informed and aligned on how this infrastructure is maintained, improved and managed.
