Law
Enforcement Explorers
The department’s law enforcement
explorer program is for teens and young adults and
is designed to enhance their interest in a career in
law enforcement. Both boys and girls are eligible,
but must be at least 14 years of age and have
graduated from the 8th grade. An explorer can be as
old as 21 years of age.
The department’s explorer program is a branch of the
Boy Scouts of America and meets once a week.
Officer Jeff Baird, who has been the department’s
coordinator for the explorer program since 1994
states “It is a hand-on type of program learning
things that they would not get anywhere else.”
Explorers learn defensive tactics, handcuffing, how
to analyze and investigate a crime scene, traffic
stop procedures, proper search techniques, patrol
procedures and they also have an opportunity to use
a firearms simulator when available.
Officers of the department most often provide the
training and at times some of the training is the
same as that received by the officers themselves.
The Explorers Program is a stepping-stone for the
participants to learn about a career in a way that
they can’t get at school while also allowing them to
participate and serve the community they live in.
If you are interested in becoming a Law Enforcement
Explorer, contact Officer Baird at the Quincy Police
Department.
