Quincy’s Local Landmarks and Historic Districts

The Quincy Preservation Commission was created by the Quincy City Council in 1981 to identify buildings, structures, districts, landscapes, and similar historic resources within the city that are worthy of designation as local landmarks and local historic districts.  After reviewing each proposed landmark or district application, the recommended applications are forwarded to the City Council for final approval.  By the year 2000, sixty local landmarks and one historic district had been designated.

Located along the Mississippi River and on the bluffs above it, Quincy is famous for its wonderful tree lined streets, beautiful parks, and attractive neighborhoods.  In addition to the local designations, Quincy is home to four National Register of Historic Places districts, covering about 250 blocks, and a dozen individually listed National Register properties.  Through these national and local designations, the Quincy Preservation Commission encourages the active preservation of the city’s great heritage that is reflected in its architectural resources.

The landmarks and historic districts are grouped roughly by location for a pleasant driving tour, not significance or order in which they were designated.
