FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How can I find out about working for QFD?

The Quincy Fire Department is an Equal Opportunity Employer.

The Quincy Fire Department will again be testing for applicants on Saturday, May 7, 2011. Applications will be available Monday, March 7, 2011 at Quincy City Hall or on the City's website: www.quincyil.gov. You will need to click on the link under the "What's New" heading in the right column for the correct application.

Inquiries should be made to Jona Holtschlag, Secretary to the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners at 217-228-4545. You may also check for job opportunities online by going to the Commission's webpage.

The hiring and promotional process is proctored by a three member Board of Fire and Police Commissioners. They continually maintain a hiring list, which is the sole source of new firefighters. This list, which is replaced every two years, contains the names of candidates who are ranked using a series of objective tests.

New employees are selected based on their ranking on the hiring list. Once selected, each candidate must then pass a polygraph test, a psychological profile test, a police background check and a complete physical examination by the department’s physician. Assuming the successful completion of the above tests, the employee is placed on the department in a 12-month probationary capacity.

To gain a spot on the hiring list, a candidate must fill out an application, and then successfully complete a written aptitude test and a task-related physical fitness test. Performance on these tests are graded and used to rank candidates within the list.

Please note: The Quincy Fire Department currently has a residency requirement as a condition of employment.

New hires will be required to obtain residency in Adams County within the first six (6) months after completion of their probation.
