The Engineering
Department is responsible for the administration
of public improvements within the city of Quincy.
The department duties include planning, estimating
project costs and fees, designing and supervising
construction of infrastructure improvements
throughout the city, including street
reconstructions, alley improvements, water and
sewer main construction, intersection
signalization and special projects.
On large public
improvement projects civil engineering consultants
are retained for project development and design.
The Department recommends the employment of
consultants and manages their performance on
projects.
The Department
reviews and evaluates subdivision and site plans
within the city and the 1.5 mile limit for
conformance with City Ordinances regarding
drainage and construction of public improvements.
Construction inspections related to these
improvements is conducted by Department personnel.
The Department
maintains and updates maps of the City's streets,
underground utilities and zoning. Engineering
responds to questions from aldermen, residents,
contractors, private consultants, other city
departments and outside agencies regarding the
city’s infrastructure, utility locations and
construction requirements. Information regarding
the infrastructure is compiled and maintained
using the city’s Geographical Information System.
The Engineering
Department maintains the traffic signal equipment
at all signalized intersections within the city of
Quincy, and also maintains all city owned street
lights.
The Engineering
Department issues permits for street openings and
curb cuts within the city Right-Of-Way. The
department also conducts inspections on these
permits to ensure that the construction is done as
to the required specifications.
